Ranthambore Safari Permit Tips

For a first visit, we recommend checking permits for Zones 1–5 first. These are popular choices among visitors hoping to see tigers, and photographers often ask for them too. This is a starting preference for planning your trip—not a prediction of what you will see.

If permits for Zones 1–5 are unavailable, consider an available option in Zones 6–10. You can also check another date or shift if your itinerary is flexible. Before changing your plans, confirm both permit availability and any hotel or transport cancellation charges.

There is no need to dismiss Zones 6–10 simply because your first choice is elsewhere. Tigers and other wildlife can be seen in these zones as well. A drive in a less-requested zone can still turn out to be the highlight of your visit.

If you are travelling mainly for photography, tell us before booking. Discuss your preferred zone and whether you want a private Gypsy, rather than choosing a permit on the zone number alone.

The vehicle options are not the same across all 10 zones. Use the following as a planning guide, and confirm access for your travel date before paying.

If you want a Canter safari, Zones 7 and 8 will not suit that choice under these arrangements. For a Gypsy, you can check options across all 10 zones, depending on permit availability.

No. Ranthambore is a natural wildlife habitat, and animals do not stay within tourist-zone boundaries. Their movement, vegetation and the conditions during your drive all affect what you see.

The popularity of Zones 1–5 should not be treated as proof that every safari there produces more sightings than a drive in Zones 6–10. You may see a tiger in any zone, or complete a safari without seeing one.

Our advice is to choose your preferred zone where available, keep realistic expectations and check the travel arrangements before paying. The next point is particularly important if you have already booked your hotel.

If your hotel is already booked, send us its name and location before selecting your safari zone. This lets us explain the travel arrangements before you pay.

We sometimes receive bookings where the selected zone is far from the guest’s hotel. The guest expects a hotel pickup, but the distance puts the property outside our pickup area.

Our safari pickup and drop service covers hotels around the relevant safari gate, subject to the confirmed arrangements. It does not cover every hotel in Ranthambore. If your hotel is far from the gate for your booked zone, we may not be able to collect you from the property.

Even if you are staying nearby, please do not assume that the vehicle will arrive at your hotel. Depending on the arrangements for that shift, the coordinator may organise a hotel pickup or ask you to reach a pickup point.

When you submit a booking through our website, we use the visitor details you provide to book the permit through the Forest Department’s booking system, subject to availability.

These are sent by email or WhatsApp. Please provide a working email address and a phone number on which you can receive messages.

A booking request or payment receipt should not be confused with an issued permit. If you have paid but have not received confirmation, contact us to check the status before making further arrangements.

When the documents arrive, read through the visitor details, safari date, shift and vehicle type. Your booking voucher also contains the safari coordinator’s contact number.

A Gypsy accommodates six tourists, apart from the driver and guide. Whether it is private or shared depends on what you book.

If you reserve two seats on a shared safari, the remaining seats can be occupied by other guests. Those two seats do not make the vehicle private.

Couples often ask, “Can we book a private Gypsy just for the two of us?” Yes—you can request the whole vehicle, subject to availability. You will need to pay for all six tourist seats, even though only two people are travelling.

A Canter accommodates 20 tourists. Guests sometimes worry that this means a crowded vehicle with people standing in the viewing area. Bookings are seat-based: 20 tourist seats are for 20 tourists, not additional standing passengers.

The Canter is an open safari vehicle, allowing passengers to look out into the forest. However, a clear view of an animal depends on where it appears, vegetation, the vehicle’s position and your seat. Neither a Canter nor a Gypsy can guarantee an unobstructed view throughout the drive.

If you are travelling with a group, tell us whether everyone needs to be in the same vehicle. Do not assume that separate bookings for the same shift will automatically be placed together.

They can use the same designated safari routes where both vehicle types are permitted. That does not mean every Canter and Gypsy follows an identical route. The drive depends on the allotted zone, permitted vehicle access and Forest Department instructions.

Choose between them based on your group size, budget and preference for a private or shared vehicle—not on a promise that one will definitely show you more animals.
